Andy Pols (no blog) is reading a fairly old book by Donald P Reinertsen called Managing the Design Factory.  A highly compressed, and perhaps unfair, summary is that the software developed by a company that is unreleased must be considered have a stock price.  Stock as in warehouse, and this is all born from the Just in time stuff that affected manufacturing decades ago.  Andy corrects me, it is not just software but all design artifacts. Anyway, the longer it is in the warehouse the more precarious its worth is, as a competitor may release something that renders the design worth less (or worthless).  How is this relevant to us?  Well cut down on the products of development that have low stock worth (documents that are read once) and decrease the time between iterations.
